Primary Monophasic Synovial Sarcoma Arising in the Mesentery: Case Report of an Extremely Rare Mesenteric Sarcoma Confirmed by Molecular Detection of a SYT-SSX2 Fusion Transcript

چکیده
Synovial sarcoma arises in the para-articular tissues, and it can also occur in various unexpected sites. We report a rare case of primary monophasic synovial sarcoma (MSS) arising in the mesentery. A 59-year-old man presented with a palpable abdominal mass. On microscopic examination, the entire tumor comprised a dense proliferation of the spindle cells without epithelial components. The tumor cells were positive for transducin-like enhancer of split 1, bcl-2, epithelial membrane antigen and CD99 but negative for CD34, CD117, alpha-smooth muscle actin, cytokeratin, and calretinin on immunohistochemistry. The reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction revealed a single 151-bp fragment representing the SYT-SSX2 fusion transcript. Because mesenteric MSS is extremely rare and many cases display histologic findings that overlap with those of more frequently involved tumors such as hemangiopericytoma and gastrointestinal stromal tumor, there is a chance of making an incorrect diagnosis that can result in an inappropriate treatment.

Primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma confirmed by molecular detection of SYT-SSX1 fusion gene transcripts: a case report and review of the literature.
This is a case report of a rare patient with primary pulmonary synovial sarcoma. The patient was a 58-year-old woman who presented with a well-defined giant mass in the right lower field on a chest radiograph. A malignant pulmonary tumor was suspected and consequently a right middle and lower lobectomy was performed. Grossly, the tumor measured 10 x 8 x 7 cm, was whitish-yellow in color and fri...
متن کاملPrimary Pulmonary Biphasic Synovial Sarcoma Confirmed by Molecular Detection of a SYT-SSX2 Fusion Gene: Report of 1 Case
We experienced a case of primary pulmonary biphasic synovial sarcoma, which was confirmed by immunohistochemistry and molecular testing of SYT-SSX2 fusion transcripts. The patient was a 61-year-old man who presented with a well-defined mass in the left upper lung field on chest radiography. Left upper lobectomy with lymph node dissection was performed. Histological and immunophenotypic features...
متن کاملSynovial Sarcoma of the Thyroid Gland
Primary synovial sarcoma of the thyroid is an extremely rare condition which has only been reported twice in the literature. We herein report a case of highly aggressive and rapidly lethal primary synovial sarcoma of the thyroid. A 72-year-old woman presented with extensive local invasion, rapid progression, and early distant metastasis secondary to primary thyroid synovial sarcoma. The tumor e...
متن کاملDetection of SYT-SSX fusion transcripts in both epithelial and spindle cell areas of biphasic synovial sarcoma using laser capture microdissection.
To investigate the distribution of tumour cells expressing the SYT-SSX fusion gene in biphasic synovial sarcoma, modified reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis was performed using microdissected specimens from haematoxylin and eosin stained sections of archival paraffin wax embedded tissues. This modified RT-PCR included a stage with degenerate oligonucleotide primed...
متن کاملMetastatic poorly differentiated monophasic synovial sarcoma to lung with unknown primary: a molecular genetic analysis.
Poorly differentiated synovial sarcomas are diagnostically challenging soft tissue tumors. They can be indistinguishable from other "small blue cell tumors" based on morphology and even immunohistochemical studies. Here we report a rare case of poorly differentiated metastatic synovial sarcoma to lung without known primary, diagnosed with molecular genetic analysis. The tumor was negative for E...
